Milford Track Guided Walk (if option selected)
I had been out kayaking the day prior and was not sure it was worth it to come all the way back out for the cruise. It was totally worth it! Stunning views, super comfy boat, lovely crew (didn't get his name but your guy from British Columbia is fabulous! However. Things they don't tell you (or I missed) you have to pay to park which is kind of baloney when you have no other option. Or there is an option to park out and walk in about 30 min, but no way to know that until I asked someone at check in. Also make sure you leave enough time to walk around the harbor from the paid parking to the boats. I arrived 15 minutes early as instructed and almost didn't make it
The small boat cruise was very pleasant. Access to the photo areas was relatively easy, as there were not too many people on board.

Excellent commentary by a very experienced and friendly crew, whilst showing us beautiful and unique sights.
I really liked the Mitre Peak's boat. We were not too many on it and thanks to its size, we could get very close from the falls. The crew was nice and having hot drinks available is a big plus!
Nice trip on a smaller scale! Very keen to make the ride worth seeing!

Boarding was easy and efficient, boat was not crowded and the cruise was enjoyable. (and wet!!) We took my daughter and her husband who had wanted to do this cruise and they were delighted. Loved every minute of it, and said they would do it again. The small boat is the way to go. The only small issue was if outside (front or back) you could not hear the commentary.
Fantastic trip out in the sound! Really pleased I booked the smaller boats after seeing the huge lines of people for the bigger boats. The boat wasnt packed and we all got a great spot to see all the beautiful sights! Would definitley do the trip again.
Headout helped me to go back to the site where I ordered so I could buy another ticket for the exact cruise. Also I could change the date of the cruise for free, which helpex me reserve tickets ahead of time. The cruise was amazing. Spacious as promised, could see from wherever we wanted and choose our seats. just the right weather (lots of rain), couldn't get enough of the leaking mountain and river, informative explanations to those who wanted, free tea/coffee/hot chocolate which helped a lot, as most of us got wet just from the short walk from the station to the port .We went also near a meeting ooint of the river and got a nice splash of water.
It was a wonderfull experience and we had the chance to have sun! The landscape is amazing. The small boat allows a good experience.
Breath taking views. Very good commentary from the Skipper. I have never been up close to so many mountains and water falls. For my family it was a once in a life time experience
One of the best trips. Staff were helpful and a water fall shower on the boat was immensely fun.
It was perfect and a amazing experience
Beautiful weather knowable ship captain
Easy entry to the boat, welcoming crew, very close to nature with the boat, phantastic surf with a group of delphines

1.The driver & captain introduced the views very clearl ! 2.Milford sounds very beautiful! 3.There are many places to visit during the trip!
I had the vegetarian pie and must say that it was inedible. The filling consisted of some mushed up vegetables and was without any kind of seasoning. I had also thought that there would be walks to speak of. Instead we were dropped of somewhere and picked up again 10 minutest later by the driver at the other end of the carpark. You should not include these kind of walks in the tour description. It is misleading.
everything was excellent from the staffs and the scenery too
Everything was very good. I had a very good and unique experience. I would gladly do it again!

What a DAY! Did the tour with my partner (he’s NOT a morning person lol) but even he perked up once we hit the glass-roof bus and saw those jaw-dropping mountains. Our driver, Nicky, kept us entertained and pointed out all the weird little facts (did you know the moss glows after rain??). The stops were spaced out just right for coffee, pics, and bathroom. The cruise was wild—stood on deck and got misted by a waterfall, didn’t even care I looked like a drowned rat. Food on board was decent—def try the carrot cake. Only tiny bummer was the upper deck was crowded for pics, but honestly, everywhere you look is EPIC. Would do it again!
Did this with my mum and teenage brother. Booked last min but it all worked out. The staff was helpful and patient with my bro’s million questions. It rained but that just made the waterfalls even more dramatic. Coach had USB chargers (lifesaver for bored teens). Was a long day but worth it for the scenery and fresh air.
Best part of our NZ trip, hands down. Our guide, Steve, was funny and super chill. He let us stop for extra pics when the road was clear. The cruise part was honestly magical—I’ve never seen water that blue. Boat wasn’t too packed, maybe cuz we went early. Bring snacks, the food sells out FAST.
Went with my girlfriend. The bus had lots of leg room (she was happy) and the commentary was actually interesting, not just boring facts. Highlight was when the captain steered us right under a waterfall—got soaked, but worth it! Not cheap but would 100% do it again.
Honestly, I had no idea what to expect. I went solo and was a bit nervous but the group vibe was warm, and the guide even helped me get some epic shots. Loved the glass roof coach—spent half the ride staring up at mountains. The cruise was stunning, and the staff were super friendly. Highly recommend for solo travelers!
Great way to see Milford Sound if you don’t want to drive yourself. The road is pretty gnarly in spots but our driver handled it like a pro. Boat was nice, food was okay (bit pricey though). Rainy when we went but that just made the waterfalls even better.
Did the tour with my dad. He’s a big history buff and loved the commentary about the land and local stories. I was just there for the views and they did NOT disappoint. Bring a rain jacket—even if it looks sunny when you leave, the weather flips fast. Worth every penny.
Mixed feelings. The nature is stunning but the tour felt a bit rushed. Would’ve liked more time at some of the photo stops. Guide was nice but the microphone kept cutting out. Still, Milford Sound is a must-see spot.
Took my teenage kids and they actually put down their phones for once. That says it all! The waterfalls were booming thanks to rain the day before. The guide was super patient with everyone. A bit crowded on the boat but everyone was in good spirits.
It was raining the whole day which made the trip kinda gloomy. Waterfalls looked cool but couldn’t see much from the bus windows, they fogged up. Staff was nice tho and tried to keep everyone upbeat.
This tour was the highlight of our NZ trip. The bus had USB chargers (clutch for long rides), and the commentary was actually fun. On the cruise, the captain slowed down so we could get good shots of the seals. Would do it again in a heartbeat.
Milford Sound was on my bucket list forever. Did the tour solo, and no regrets. The staff made everyone feel welcome, and the glass roof on the coach is a game changer. Sat up front on the boat for the best views. Bring layers, it gets chilly fast!
Good experience overall. The road to Milford was twisty but the driver was super careful. Loved the stops for photos—especially the one with the giant swing bridge. Only thing: wish the food on the boat was a bit cheaper.
Went with my partner, both of us blown away by the scenery. The commentary was actually interesting (and not too much talking, thankfully). The cruise was the best bit—stood on the bow and got soaked by the spray. Bring waterproofs!
I went with my little sister and she hasn’t stopped talking about the waterfalls since. The coach seats are way more comfortable than I expected, and the driver had snacks for sale. The cruise was the best part, especially seeing the seals sunbathing. Would def recommend for families.
Took my parents, both in their 70s. Staff helped them get on/off the bus and boat. The scenery is just unreal—never seen anything like it. Rainy day but that made the waterfalls extra special. Bring waterproof shoes!
Milford Sound lived up to the hype for us. The glass-roof bus was amazing for photos, and the captain of the boat was hilarious. Got to see dolphins swimming alongside—unexpected bonus!
Solid day out. The drive is long but you barely notice with the views outside. The boat was a bit noisy inside but quiet on deck. Staff kept everyone moving along nicely.
Did this as a solo traveler. Loved the commentary and chance to chat with other folks on the bus. Boat staff were super helpful. Got great pics even though it rained most of the day.
Solid experience. The road to Milford was a bit rough in spots but our driver handled it well. Would recommend for anyone who doesn’t want to drive themselves.

Smooth and pleasant flight with phenomenal views of mountain chains. The milfordsound cruise was not too busy. Could see a penguin swiming in ocean, seals enjoying sun bathing. Perfect day! Lovely experience!

Lynette was a great tour guide and very knowledgeable about the history of the region and the stops and locations were wonderful.
The view is awesome. The travel guide Jeff was excellent. He explained the history and all relevant information to Milford sound, which made our trip a remarkable experience.
We loved the natural beauty of Milford Sound and coming up close to the waterfall for a glacial wash. The driver of Altitude Tours passenger van Erik was super interesting like a walking encyclopedia and made the trip a real joy.
Our guide Albert was very knowledgeable about the whole area of Queenstown. It was a great relaxing drive with great views. Milford sound was breathtaking. Would highly recommend this tour.
We knew from the pictures that Milford Sound would be spectacular. Two things made this even better. Our guide Lynette clearly loves people and her job sharing her knowledge. As importantly, she's a safe and smooth driver which can be a big deal traveling 8 total hours in a bus on the narrow and twisty roads. The captain of the boat found opportunities to get us up close to a group of seals and then a couple of penguins. He also took us almost underneath a waterfall which was an amazing experience. Dress for cold and wet as we did and you won't have to run inside. We usually like to do our own discovering on trips but we're really glad we signed up for this full-day tour.

Personalised table for 2 and the knowledgeable hosts and guides made it well worth the $$$. Food was good and topped off with a cheese board. The all female crew only added to the experience.
From the moment we stepped on board the cruise boat we could sense a good vibe ,after receiving our complementary glass of champagne and canapés everyone were ready for a great time ,the crew were very friendly and helpful with any of our questions. The cruise itself out to the Tasman Sea was very enjoyable with the onboard nature expert explaining many points of interest. On reflection we can honestly recommend the whole experience.
This was a truly amazing experience in a magical part of the world.

Our ticketing experience was perfect with no problems. Our trip out was out standing. Great crew on both boats and I think Tabitha was our guide. Very interesting and so knowledgeable and that's a credit to her. Apart from being quite windy and rather cold out experience was very memorable. My favourite part was seeing the Dolphins and where we stopped and the boat was turned off. Very tranquil.
The whole experience from booking to end was smooth and efficient. The trip more than lived up to our expectations and was very good value. Doubtful Sound was absolutely stunning and we were lucky to have a beautiful sunny day after heavy rain so the waterfalls were really impressive. The boat trip across Lake Manapouri and the coach trip over the pass really add to the whole experience. Good commentary from everyone throughout the trip without bombarding you with too much information. I would highly recommend this trip.

This U-shaped valley is situated opposite to the Milford Sound wharf and is the first stop on your cruise. The slopes of Mitre Peak, Mt Phillips and a few other mountains in the area give this valley its shape. The rare bird kakapo was last spotted here in the 1970s after scientists believed it to have gone extinct.

Facilities
Accessibility
Facilities at Milford Sound are limited with no shops available—so pack everything you need to stay comfortable during your cruise.
While both are part of Fiordland National Park, Milford is more accessible and famous for its dramatic Mitre Peak. Doubtful Sound is larger, more remote, and typically requires an overnight trip. Milford offers a perfect introduction to fjord experiences if you're limited on time.
Tour operators monitor conditions closely and will contact you if cancellations occur. Most offer full refunds or rebooking options for weather-related cancellations.
Yes, but prepare for a long day (12-14 hours). For a more relaxed experience, consider staying overnight in Te Anau, which is halfway between Queenstown and Milford Sound.
While cruises are the most popular option, you can also kayak the fjord for a more intimate experience or hike the famous Milford Track for a multi-day adventure.
Wildlife can be seen year-round, but dolphins are more commonly spotted in summer months (December-February). Fur seals are present throughout the year.
Cell coverage is limited in Fiordland National Park. Most cruise boats offer WiFi, but consider downloading maps and information before your trip.
During peak season (December-February), book at least 2-3 weeks in advance. For the quieter shoulder seasons, 1-2 weeks is usually sufficient.
Yes, several short walks start near the visitor center, including the Milford Foreshore Walk (30 minutes) and the Milford Sound Lookout Track (20 minutes). For serious hikers, the world-famous Milford Track begins nearby.
Absolutely! Many locals prefer rainy days as the waterfalls are more spectacular. Milford receives over 7 meters of rainfall annually, creating hundreds of temporary waterfalls that only appear during and after rain.
Yes, you can stay overnight in Milford Sound. However, accommodation options are limited. The primary option is the Milford Sound Lodge, which offers various room types. Due to its remote location and popularity, booking well in advance is highly recommended.
