Boat

1

Deepwater Basin Departure Point

Start your adventure at Deepwater Basin, where a short water taxi crossing whisks you across to legendary Sandfly Point, the official end of the Milford Track. This ride offers your first taste of Fiordland’s wilderness, with dramatic peaks rising from the fiord and the sense of entering somewhere remote and special.

Walk

2

Sandfly Point (Milford Track Official End/Start)

Stand at the official end of New Zealand’s most famous Great Walk. Facilities, information panels, and the iconic “Milford Track” sign greet both day hikers and those finishing the full 53.5 km trek. For day walkers, it’s a chance to step onto the world-renowned track without committing to four days.

Walk

3

Arthur River Valley Floor

Walk alongside the clear, rushing Arthur River, where ancient beech and rimu trees create a natural cathedral overhead. Ferns and mosses carpet the forest floor, giving you a sense of stepping back into primeval wilderness.

Walk

4

Lake Ada Viewpoint

A short detour takes you to Lake Ada, where calm waters reflect the Sheerdown Hills in perfect symmetry. This serene spot offers one of the most photogenic scenes on the track.

Walk

5

Giant Gate Falls & Swing Bridge

Reach the 30 m Giant Gate Falls, a dramatic cascade spilling from a hanging valley above. The swing bridge offers unbeatable views, while the riverside area makes this the highlight and turnaround point of the walk.

Walk

6

Sandfly Point

Arrive back at Sandfly Point for your water taxi pickup, with flexible times between 1:30 pm and 4:30 pm. The return leg brings new light, new moods, and often new wildlife. Your guide may point out fantails, grey warblers, bellbirds, and occasionally robins, which are especially active later in the day. Take a final photo with the Milford Track sign before returning across Deepwater Basin.

7

Milford Sound Visitor Terminal & Wharf

Transition from your hike to a new perspective, boarding your Milford Sound cruise. The Visitor Terminal houses operator check-in desks, restrooms, and interpretive panels, while the wharf delivers first panoramic views of Mitre Peak before you step onto your vessel.

Queenstown/Te Anau Coach or Self-Drive via Milford Road (SH94)

Start the adventure with curated coach transfers from Queenstown (~8:30am pickup with scenic stops) or Te Anau (late morning), or self-drive the legendary Milford Road with ample time for viewpoints before the overnight cruise check-in. This pre-cruise leg adds iconic stops like Mirror Lakes, Eglinton Valley, and the dramatic Homer Tunnel approach that set the scene for Milford Sound

1

Milford Sound Terminal

1 activities

Board the purpose-built Milford Mariner at 4:00pm for New Zealand's ultimate fiord experience, checking into your private ensuite cabin before departing on a 20-22 hour wilderness adventure that includes full-length fiord cruising, overnight anchorage, water activities, and gourmet meals. The relaxed late-afternoon departure allows optimal lighting for photography while avoiding day-cruise crowds.

Highlights

Evening Departure & Welcome Orientation

Included in price

Begin your journey with a welcome orientation from the specialist nature guide while cruising past iconic landmarks in golden evening light, with complimentary tea and coffee served as the vessel begins its comprehensive exploration of the full 16km fiord. The relaxed pace allows for detailed commentary about Fiordland's formation and significance. The late afternoon timing means wildlife is often more active, with seals hauling out for evening rest and dolphins potentially more playful as day cruise traffic diminishes.

Frequently asked questions about Milford Sound cruises

What's the difference between Milford Sound and Doubtful Sound?

While both are part of Fiordland National Park, Milford is more accessible and famous for its dramatic Mitre Peak. Doubtful Sound is larger, more remote, and typically requires an overnight trip. Milford offers a perfect introduction to fjord experiences if you're limited on time.

What happens if my cruise is canceled due to weather?

Tour operators monitor conditions closely and will contact you if cancellations occur. Most offer full refunds or rebooking options for weather-related cancellations.

Can I see Milford Sound as a day trip from Queenstown?

Yes, but prepare for a long day (12-14 hours). For a more relaxed experience, consider staying overnight in Te Anau, which is halfway between Queenstown and Milford Sound.

Is a cruise the only way to experience Milford Sound?

While cruises are the most popular option, you can also kayak the fjord for a more intimate experience or hike the famous Milford Track for a multi-day adventure.

What's the best season for wildlife spotting?

Wildlife can be seen year-round, but dolphins are more commonly spotted in summer months (December-February). Fur seals are present throughout the year.

Can I get cell phone reception in Milford Sound?

Cell coverage is limited in Fiordland National Park. Most cruise boats offer WiFi, but consider downloading maps and information before your trip.

How early should I book my fjord experience?

During peak season (December-February), book at least 2-3 weeks in advance. For the quieter shoulder seasons, 1-2 weeks is usually sufficient.

Are there any walking trails around the Milford Sound area?

Yes, several short walks start near the visitor center, including the Milford Foreshore Walk (30 minutes) and the Milford Sound Lookout Track (20 minutes). For serious hikers, the world-famous Milford Track begins nearby.

Is it worth visiting Milford Sound in the rain?

Absolutely! Many locals prefer rainy days as the waterfalls are more spectacular. Milford receives over 7 meters of rainfall annually, creating hundreds of temporary waterfalls that only appear during and after rain.

Can I stay in Milford Sound?

Yes, you can stay overnight in Milford Sound. However, accommodation options are limited. The primary option is the Milford Sound Lodge, which offers various room types. Due to its remote location and popularity, booking well in advance is highly recommended.

I had been out kayaking the day prior and was not sure it was worth it to come all the way back out for the cruise. It was totally worth it! Stunning views, super comfy boat, lovely crew (didn't get his name but your guy from British Columbia is fabulous! However. Things they don't tell you (or I missed) you have to pay to park which is kind of baloney when you have no other option. Or there is an option to park out and walk in about 30 min, but no way to know that until I asked someone at check in. Also make sure you leave enough time to walk around the harbor from the paid parking to the boats. I arrived 15 minutes early as instructed and almost didn't make it

I really liked the Mitre Peak's boat. We were not too many on it and thanks to its size, we could get very close from the falls. The crew was nice and having hot drinks available is a big plus!

Our pilot Jerod was great. We enjoyed flying over the beautiful mountains and sound. We signed up late but was told on the website that hotel pickup was included. When we paid we were told we had to meet at the office on shotovet. Not a long walk but not what was promised.
